Yesterday’s royal baby shower brought together members of Meghan Markle’s inner circle, from close college friends to chic A-listers. Her known pals like designer Misha Nonoo, actress Abigail Spencer, and high profile lawyer Amal Clooney were all among the mix, but Gayle King was a pleasant surprise on the guest list.

The CBS News anchor’s friendship with the Duchess of Sussex hasn’t been as public as those of the other attendees at the party, so we’re breaking down the links between our new favorite pals.

King anchored a TV special about the duchess ahead of the royal wedding.

A month before the royal wedding, King hosted the television special Meghan Markle: An American Princess on CBS, which chronicled the new duchess’ life–from grade school to her time on Suits–leading up to her stunning nuptials to Prince Harry.

Although Meghan and Gayle didn’t share screen time for the program, the show included interviews with people who know the royal best, including her former sorority sisters, Suits colleagues, and photographer Alexi Lubomirski (a descendant of the Polish royal family) who snapped the couple’s official engagement and wedding portraits.

Around a week before the royal wedding, King was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for a sit-down interview. She mentioned that she had a soft spot for both Prince Harry and Prince William, recalling how young they were when their mother Princess Diana passed away, and how Harry has transformed into “a grown ass man who is in love with someone who is very unexpected.”

She continued with praise for Meghan: “All of the things you think the royal family would [frown upon] and is so unexpected, they really have embraced her and I think this is great.”

King was at the royal wedding, but not as a guest.

The TV host flew to England to cover the history-making event for CBS This Morning last May. She was at Windsor Castle and shared plenty of behind-the-scenes images on her Instagram. From chatting with ET‘s Kevin Fraser to polling spectators about Harry’s facial hair, Gayle looked jovial reporting the event—even if she wasn’t an attendee.

King also posted an Insta videoahead of the big day where she revealed that “Harry and William are walking down the street talking to people. It’s awesome that they’re doing that. Awesome, awesome, awesome. It’s so cute!”

Although she was not formally invited to the wedding or reception as a guest, King’s longtime BFF Oprah Winfrey was in attendance and sported a blush pink Stella McCartney dress with a gorgeous vintage Philip Treacy hat. During CBS’s coverage of the nuptials, King revealed that Winfrey “had a little bit of a wedding emergency” and had to change her outfit last-minute because her original look was “too white” for a wedding. (Oprah later fessed up about her closely-avoided fashion crisis on Instagram.)

King also teased her pal about taking the bus to travel to Windsor Castle. “I said Oprah has to ride the bus? Oprah is not a bus person. Has she been informed?!” the host joked.
