Priyanka Chopra: “My personal style has changed quite dramatically”
Ralph Lauren has been a long-standing favourite with Indians for several years now, and actor Priyanka Chopra is definitely among those leading this pack of patrons. Following her first major appearance in the brand at the MET Gala in 2017 (in that now-iconic trench coat look), she went on to sport the label on several occasions. And her wedding ceremony in December 2018, where Chopra became one of the only three brides to be dressed by Ralph Lauren himself in the last 50 years, clearly topped this list.
Chopra was in attendance at the American heritage brand’s India debut (in partnership with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited), as they opened doors to their first luxury store in New Delhi’s Chanakya Mall, styled in the Randall evening dress from Ralph Lauren’s spring/summer 2019 collection, with a gold patent leather minaudière by the same label. Spread over two floors, the store is home to the world of Ralph Lauren, and stocks Purple Label and Ralph Lauren Collection alongside classic Polo Ralph Lauren. On the occasion, Chopra speaks to Vogue about her fondness for the brand and the evolution of her personal style.
Take us back to the beginning of your association with Ralph Lauren. What about the label’s aesthetic initially appealed to you?
The 2017 MET Gala was an event of many firsts. When my stylist, Christina Ehrlich, and the Ralph Lauren atelier suggested the idea of the trench look, I was immediately convinced. I believe Ralph celebrates a woman who is strong and independent, but doesn’t need to prove it in any way—she dresses for herself, and this is an emotion I relate to.
Ralph Lauren has always been a popular choice with Indians. According to you, what is it about the brand that resonates with us?
Ralph Lauren is a classic brand that exudes effortless, timeless style. But most importantly, it stands for and celebrates family. I think the reason people world over connect with Ralph Lauren is because no matter our differences, we all believe in this too.
Which are your favourite Ralph Lauren pieces? And what are you eyeing from the new collection?
I think a Ralph Lauren suit is the most feminine armour a woman can put on—it will make you feel like you can take on anything. I’m also a huge fan of the evening wear, with its elegant details and graceful silhouettes. From the spring/summer 2019 collection, I am really digging the vibe of the pristine white admiral jacket, paired with those billowing, wide-legged pants.
How has your own style evolved over the past few years?
I think my personal style has changed quite dramatically. I experiment far more now than I did before. I have also come to enjoy the process much more. Over the years, I’ve realised that I have to be true to me, whatever the trends might be.
How do you manage your wardrobe choices with a trans-continental schedule? What are your fail-safe picks?
It takes an army! I manage with the help of a great team of stylists, makeup artists and hairstylists. A team that understands your aesthetic definitely makes the process much more fluid. My go-to staples would be a midi dress in a classic silhouette with a pretty pair of pumps. Recently, I have also fallen in love with mini bags and smaller sunglasses. Whilst I often stick to more tailored shapes, I do have fun experimenting with exciting and quirky accessories.
