Pose Star Mj Rodriguez’s Guide to Effortless Red Carpet Glam
For Mj Rodriguez, getting ready for a red carpet is half the fun. The actress, who stars in FX’s hit show Pose (now in its second season), can regularly be seen onscreen with a super-highlighted brow and larger-than-life curls. In real life, she tends to stray more toward the neutral, though a red carpet day gives her the chance to play up her naturally glamorous features; the ones she’s been appreciating more and more. “Being on Pose has changed my life,” Rodriguez says. “Women of a certain experience, we have never had a chance to tell our story. [The show] has helped me gain a lot more confidence; living and not caring about what people think.”
To prep her skin, Rodriguez uses Dior Beauty’s toner, followed by a spritz or two of rosewater. “I really started learning how to [do] makeup when I was in Rent,” she says, “and it looked kinda cray-cray.” But, she adds, “it was a time for me to learn the dimensions of my face.” As time went on, Rodriguez’s skills sharpened, as is clear in her Beauty Secrets guide. With a handy Beauty Blender, Rodriguez pats Fenty Beauty’s foundation into her skin (“shout-out to RiRi!”) and contours her cheekbones with Milk Makeup’s bronzing stick. She then covers any dark circles with a pigmented concealer.
“I like to be over the top,” she says, laughing, while adding a shimmering highlighter onto her cupid’s bow with her fingertips. Next, singing her way through brow application, Rodriguez paints on feathery brushstrokes: “These eyebrows are arched, baby!” And, of course, no red carpet look would be complete without a bold lip. Lining her pout with a deep brown liner, she then adds a glossy stain to finish it off. Whether she’s inspiring at the Met Gala or the Golden Globes, Rodriguez’s approach to special-occasion beauty is one to follow every time
